1. apply for sth. to sb.向某人申请某事  apply A to B.把A应用到B上
  apply oneself to (doing) sth.致力于，集中精力做某事 = apply one’s mind to sth.
  他努力干好新工作。He applied himself to his new job.
  这种标准不适用于孩子。The rule doesn’t apply to children.
  他专思考这个问题。He applied himself / his mind to the problem.

2. demand 常用结构
  meet / satisfy one’s demands满足某人的需求  in demand需求量大；有需求  
  demand to do sth.要求去做某事  demand sb. of sth.要求某人某理  
  damand that sb. (should) do sth.要求  make the demand that…(should) do  
  My demand is that…    It is demanded that…

3. delight n. & vt.
  with deligth高兴地，乐意地  to one’s delight令某人高兴的是
  be in high delight非常高兴地  take delight to do / in doing sth. 高兴地做某事
  be delighted to do 高兴地做某事  be delighted at因…而高兴
  be delighted with sth.由于某事而高兴
  例如: 1)To his great delight, his novel was accepted by the public. 令他高兴的是，他的小说得到了公众的认可。
     2) I have read your letter with delight. / I am delighted to have read your letter. / I take delight to have read / in having read your letter. 我高兴地读了你的来信
     3) The news delighted the whole nation. / The whole nation were delighted with the news. 这个消息使全国一片沸腾。

4. assume  vt.假定, 设想
  I assume you always get up at the same time. 我想你总是在同一个时间起床。

5. up to 到达； up to now直到现在  What is he up to?  It is up to sb. to do

6. 倍数 + -er + than…
  倍数 + the + n.(size/weight/height/width/length) + of…
  倍数 + as + adj /adv. as…   倍数 + as + many / much + n. + as…

7. Come when it is convenient to you.
  Come when it is to your convenience.

8. wind v.(河、路等)蜿蜒，曲折而行，迂回；卷缠，缠绕；（钟表等）上发条，转动（把手）n. 风，气流
  The river winds its way to the end of the forest.
  这条河蜿蜒而行，一直流到森林的尽头。
  He forgot to wind his watch (up). 他忘记要给手表上发条了。
  Wind the bandage around your finger. 用绷带把你的手指包扎起来。
  It was too hot without a breath of wind. 天气很炎热，连一丝风也没有。
  注意：wind过去式及过去分词为wound

9. contribute vt.& vi. 捐献，捐赠；贡献出；投稿（常和介词to连用）
  A great amount of money was contributed to the disaster fund by people from all walks of life.
  各行各业的人给灾难基金会大量捐款。
  He contributes regularly to the magazine.他定期给这个杂志投稿。
  Although he has a lot of money, he didn’t contribute to his colleague’s wedding present.
  虽然他很有钱，但却没有出钱给同事买结婚礼物。
  The chairman of the conference hoped that everyone would contribute to the discussion.
  大会主席希望每个人都参与讨论。
  此外，contribute to 可表示“有助于，促使”。contribute 的名词形式：contribution，如：make   contributions to (为……做贡献)

10. variety n. 多样，种种
  a variety of=varieties of =various(adj.) 各种各样的
  He resigned for a variety of reasons.他由于种种原因而辞职了。
  I am tired of the dishes on offer which lack variety.
  我吃腻了所提供的饭菜，它们种类太单一了。
  注意动词形式：vary.
 The students’ homework varies considerably in quality.学生家庭作业的质量参差不齐。
 The menu varies with the season.菜单随着季节的变化而变化。

11. measure vt. & vi 测量，量度 n. 大小，尺寸；措施
  Did you measure the windows before buying the curtains?
  你在买窗帘之前量了窗子的尺寸了吗？
  The tablecloth measures 20 by 18 feet. 台布长20英尺，宽18英尺。
  Fat burned can be measured in calories. 燃烧了的脂肪可用卡路里为单位衡量。
  Don’t take measures before measuring advantages and disadvantages.
  在断定利弊之前不要采取措施。
  I’m putting on weight so I have to make clothes to my own measure.
  体重增加使我不得不去量身订做衣服。

12. equal adj.（常和to连用）相等的，平等的 n. 同等的人，相等物 v. 与……相等
  Everyone is born equal. 人生来都是平等的。
  The price of the digital TV is equal to that of a computer. 这台数码电视与电脑的价格相当。
  Our cars are the equal of those produced anywhere in the world.
  我们的汽车可以与世界上任何地方生产的汽车相媲美。

13. expose  vt. 使暴露，使显露；使暴光，使处于……作用（或影响）之下，使遭受
  In some countries, women are not allowed to expose their faces in public.
  在一些国家，女性是不允许在公共场合露脸的。
  He exposed the illegal actions of the government to the media.他向媒体揭露了政府的不法行为。
  The film cannot be developed because it is exposed. 胶卷暴光了所以无法冲洗。
  Her youth and beauty exposed her to many dangers. 她的年轻与美貌让她遭受了很多危险。
